USING NIXSTATS TO MONITOR SERVER PERFORMANCE

This article will show you how to use NixStats to monitor your website. NixStats not only monitors the uptime but it also monitors the performance of the server your website is running on.

NixStats ([[1]]) is a website that offers free service. The service it offers includes the monitoring and displaying statistics of the performance of your server. That way can you pin point how you server setup is affecting CPU load and consumes the server’s RAM. Not only that, NixStats offers you the ability to grab and display more data on quite nice web pages. If you’ve gotten around using NodeQuery, then you should know that NixStats is a very similar service and is its head to head competitor.

The time when I tested NixStats it was still in the Beta version and it did not have much information to offer, not even an “About Page”. But I tested the service anyway and it worked pretty well for me. If you ask the LET members, they’ll tell you that they simply love the uptime monitoring that NixStats has to offer. I on the other hand like its catchy interface.

Signing up for a free account:

The last time I used the service, they were offering a free sign up. They were still in the Beta phase of the version then and needed more people to sign up. In return they would have gotten useful feedback about the service. Now if you visit the service they still are offering a free sign up. Hurry up and get your free sign up to avail their service.

All you have to do is go to [[2]] and click the Sign Up link. A dropdown panel will appear asking for your email and password. Fill out all the details that are required there. Once you’ve done that, click on the Big orange sign up button.

So now you have created an account and logged in to NixStats. Once there, you will notice four main sections of the interface that NixStats has to offer. They are Dashboard, Status Pages, My Domain, and My Servers. The main page that NixStats displays is the Dashboard. Here you can see the summary of your server’s performance which looks somewhat like this:

The next part of this amazing website is the Status Pages. Status Pages is a place where NixStats gives you the ability to create a custom public status page. This public display page gives you a huge advantage to monitor the server monitoring result without even logging into the NixStats Dashboard. The best part of the Status Pages is that the URL of Status Page can be customized using CNAME.

After the Status Page we have My Domain. My Domain is a section of the NixStats that enables you to add, delete and manage all your domains that you monitor using NixStats. Domain monitoring is a term used for this purpose. It also has another name that is used alternately known as uptime monitoring.

What you can do is that you can type in the name for you domain that you wish to monitor. This will monitor your entered domain’s uptime. Enter the name and then click on the Add Domain button.

Once you have added the domain name, click the link for that domain name and define spome setting over there. There setting are the notification setting which also require you to add in your email address.

So that was easy wasn’t it? No sweat at all. Let us move to the next section that is My Servers. My Servers is an area that includes and displays all of the servers that you added in to it. If this is the first time to this section then you need to add a server to it. To add a server to your monitoring list you just have to login to the server and issue the command that is given below which is actually pretty easy.

wget --no-check-certificate -N https://api.nixstats.com/install.sh && bash install.sh 55748879xxxxxxx4567

I got 55748879xxxxxxx4567 as the sh in the email. You have to replace 55748879xxxxxxx4567 with what you got in your email form NixStats.

So once you have executes the above command, you will see that a new server has been added automatically in your My Server page.

That’s what there is. What you can do is that you can repeat the “Add a Domain” and “Add a Server” part for each website or server that you want to add here.

Once you added what you wanted to you can check and overview of how your server actually performs

Finally what you need to do is that you need to create a public Status Page. Click on the Status Page link that is given in the left menu.

Now click on the green Create a Page button. Once you have cicked there you will be directed to the next page. You have to fill in all the required fields there which include:

  • Entering the title of the page
  • Uploading an image that will be considered a logo for it
  • Defining a custom hostname
  • Choose the domains. These domains will be those of which you want the status to be on display
  • Choose the server. There servers will be those of which performance you want to be on display

That is all there is to it. NixStats is a great website that can be used for the purpose it is created. You can manage all and everything there is to the performance of one’s website. There is nothing to it except making an account on the website. Entering the website there and following the procedure above. I would urge you all to use this service. NixStats is free for all users.

What I loved about the website was the interface it had to offer and the level of service it offered. Amateur website managers have a great utility tool when they use this website. NixStats is a free uptime monitoring tool and is extremely easy to use.
