How to Make a Ruffled Dress for a Toddler: 5 Steps - MakeSureHow
Edit Article

How about layers of sequin-covered ruffles for your little fashion lover?

Does your miniature fashionista go through clothing faster than you can say “shopping trip?" Between her rough adventures in the backyard and her never-ending growth spurts, it seems the dress that fit her last week just won’t work this week. How about taking some of the bite out of the clothing budget with some homemade ruffled dresses you can make from her old tank tops and some pretty little pieces of leftover fabric?

Steps

  1. 1
Measure the circumference of the tank top's neckline and add about 25 percent. Cut a piece of fabric to this length by 3 1/2 inches wide. This will be the neck ruffle.
  2. 2
Fold over one long edge and sew along it. Now it’s neat and tidy. Sew along the other long edge. Now, before you tie off the thread, pull! Keep pulling until the length of the fabric is equal to the circumference of the neckline, plus about 1/2 inch. Pin this edge just inside the neckline and sew all the way around. Voila -- your first ruffle!
  3. 3
Measure around the bottom of the tank top and add about 50 percent. Cut a piece of fabric to this length by 9 1/2 inches wide. This will be the first adorable ruffle at the bottom of the dress. Fold over one long edge and sew it, just like you did with the neck ruffle.
  4. 4
Cut another piece of fabric for the next ruffle. Make it the same length as the first skirt ruffle but make the width 6 1/2 inches. Fold over one long edge and sew it.
  5. 5
Lay the 6 1/2-inch wide fabric on top of the wider one with one long edge aligned. Sew along the aligned long edge to join the two pieces. This time though, use a stretchy elastic thread. Just like before, pull the thread until the length is equal to the tank top bottom’s circumference. Pin this edge inside the bottom of the tank top and sew all the way around. That’s it! You’ve created the bottom ruffles for the dress.

Tips

  • You can make the dress longer by adding increasingly longer layers of fabric ruffles beneath the first two layers.

Things You'll Need

  • Tank top
  • Cotton blend fabric (about 1 yard)
  • Sewing machine and thread
  • Elastic thread
  • Sewing pins
