How to Make a Kid's Costume of a Strong Man in a Circus: 8 Steps
Edit Article

Help your child look like a real strongman.

A strongman costume can make your child feel like an invincible hero on Halloween or for any other dress-up occasion. Whether he has seen one in real life or only in the movies, a strong man has iconic muscles, tight pants and, of course, a barbell. Make the costume yourself and save the cash you would have spent at a costume shop.

  1. 1
Cut the sleeves off a shirt at the shoulder seams using scissors, then cut the neckline off. Make the new neckline come down lower than a normal shirt would. To achieve this, simply put the shirt on your child and use a pen to mark where you want the neckline to go, then take it off and cut along the markings. Classic T-shirt colors for this look include solid red or striped red and white, or even striped black and white.
  2. 2
Put the flesh-colored long sleeve shirt on your child. Draw tattoos like "I love Mom" or "Lifting for Life" on the shirt sleeves with a permanent marker.
  3. 3
Stuff the sleeves of the shirt with cotton batting, forming it to look like big muscles, packing it tightly so it doesn't move around. Put the red sleeveless shirt on top of the flesh-colored one.
  4. 4
Dress your child in tight black or navy blue shorts. The tighter and smaller the shorts, the more authentic they look. Borrow a younger sibling's shorts if necessary, or purchase some in a smaller size.
  5. 5
Blow up two black balloons so they resemble round balls and tie the ends in knots. Write the weight on each balloon using the paint pen. Pick something ridiculously high, like 500 lbs. each. You could even go for 1,000 if your child is REALLY strong.
  6. 6
Paint the dowel black and let it dry.
  7. 7
Drill a small hole in each end of the dowel. Push the end of one of the balloons through the hole and out the other side, pulling until the knot comes out. The hole should be small enough that this is slightly difficult to do; you don't want the balloon to pop back out again later on. Repeat on the other side with the other balloon.
  8. 8
Draw a large handlebar mustache on your child's face with the eyeliner pencil. The bigger, the better here! Puny mustaches don't match well with the large muscles and tattoos.

  • Instead of a flesh-colored shirt, use the legs of a pair of pantyhose; cut off the feet and slide them on your child's arms.If you think your child will be rough with the barbell's balloons, make small balls out of fabric and stuff them with cotton batting, using a stapler to attach them to the wooden dowel.
