How to Make Fabric Book Covers for Children: 6 Steps
Edit Article

Do you want to keep your books clean and protected from little hands?

You want your little ones to read, but let's face it, children can turn a beautiful book into one covered in stickers, food and filth. This can be very unfortunate if you let your children read books that are special to you, like ones from your own childhood. Don't allow special books to become ruined -- cover them with decorative fabric book covers. You can even make the covers to match your little one's bedroom decor to create a beautiful and coordinated atmosphere.

Steps

  1. 1
Lay the book you want to cover on a table with the flaps laying flat. Measure the length and width of the book with measuring tape. You do not need to pick out a specific size of book -- any book can be covered with fabric as long as you measure it first.
  2. 2
Cut out a piece of fabric using the measurements you took from the book, adding an extra inch to the length and width measurements. Don't worry about choosing the fabric -- any flat fabric will do. Great options include cotton, linen or polyester. Try to avoid overly bulky fabrics, though, like velvet or bouclé. These fabrics may make the book difficult to close. You might even match the fabric you choose to the colors and textures in your child's bedroom.
  3. 3
Lay the fabric piece flat on the table, then lay the book flat on top of the fabric. Adjust the book so that it is centered on top of the fabric with the additional fabric sticking out evenly at the side edges. You don't want the cover to look crooked.
  4. 4
Lift the book slightly and fold under the top and bottom edges of the fabric so that the edges are flush with the edges of the book. This will make the fabric look tailored and smooth. Lay the book back down.
  5. 5
Fold over the fabric on the left side and tape it into the inside flap of the book using art tape. Art tape allows you to remove the fabric cover at a later date, and will not tear or rip the paper parts of the book.
  6. 6
Fold over the fabric on the right side and tape it in place as before. Now you have a beautifully covered book for your toddler or preschooler to read and enjoy!
