An edible handbag makes a nice accessory for your little fashionista.
Whether you're celebrating a special princess, a knight, a sports enthusiast or a modern little fashionista, these novelty cakes will become the centerpiece of any preschool birthday party. Your party guests will be talking about the amazing cake on the playground for weeks to come. Choose the cake that best suits your party theme and then get your kiddo to help out with the cake decorating so she can show off her frosting talent with pride.
Prepare your cake batter from your favorite store-bought or homemade recipe. Pour it into the large rectangular cake pan. A 10-by-13-inch works well, but a pan that's slightly larger or smaller is just fine. Bake the cake according to the cake mix instructions and then cool it completely on a cooling rack.
Cut out a large picture of your kiddo's favorite character. Lay the picture on top of the cake and cut around the outer edge of the picture to make the basic shape of the character.
Cut the picture into individual sections (the face, arms and shirt). Assemble the pieces on the cake like a jigsaw puzzle. Fill the pastry bags with the different color icings and draw an outline of each puzzle piece on the cake. Remove the paper pieces and fill in the icing outlines with more icing.
Prepare your favorite cake mix and divide it evenly between the two semi-sphere cake pans. Bake the cakes and then cool on wire racks.
Spread icing on the flat side of each cake and then press these together to make a full sphere. Spread some icing on one end of the ball and stand it on this end on a cake tray. The icing will act like glue and hold the ball in place.
Decorate the ball-shaped cake with icing. For soccer balls, spread white icing all over the cake, let it cool in the fridge and then draw the black lines on the ball with black icing and a pastry bag. For a basketball, slather the cake in orange icing, refrigerate and then draw on the black lines.
Prepare your favorite cake mix and then divide evenly between two 8-inch round cake pans. Bake according to the cake's instructions and then cool thoroughly.
Spread icing on one flat side of each cake and then press these two sides together. Cut off about 1/4 of the cake to make a flat bottom for the purse. Spread icing on the flat bottom and then stand it upright.
Spread a thick, smooth layer of icing over the entire cake and then decorate the purse with edible gemstones and colored sugars. Bend a licorice stick in half and poke the ends into the top of the cake to make the purse handle.
Prepare two of your favorite cake batters and pour them into 6-inch, 8-inch and 10-inch cake pans. You can use round or square pans, depending on what shape you’d like your castle. Bake the cakes and cool completely.
Spread icing on one flat side of the smaller two cakes and then stack the three cakes together from largest to smallest. Spread a thick layer of icing on the castle to cover every inch. Use any color you like to coordinate with your party’s color scheme.
Coat some Styrofoam cones in icing and colored sugar and stand these around the tiers and on the top of the cake. If you'd prefer to make everything edible, coat some ice cream cones in icing and colored sugar, and then stand them on the cake instead.
