How to Display a Child's First Pair of Ballet Shoes: 10 Steps
Edit Article

Hold onto the memories of ballet by saving your daughter's shoes.

If you have a budding ballerina on your hands, you've probably bought at least one pair of the iconic pale pink ballet slippers. Because your child's first dance class is a momentous milestone, you'll probably want to hang onto those slippers for posterity. Don't just toss them in a drawer or pack them into a box though. With a bit of creativity, you can display those tiny pink shoes in an interesting and memorable way.

  1. 1
Gather the main items you want to put in the shadow box. In addition to the ballet shoes, collect a few photographs of your child wearing the ballet shoes.
  2. 2
Open the shadow box and start arranging your main items. Pin the ballet shoes to the back of the box with a straight pin or nestle them in one corner of the box.
  3. 3
Adhere the photographs to the box once you've decided where you want them. Use straight pins or glue to display them around the ballet slippers.
  4. 4
Arrange your accent items around the ballet shoes and photographs. You might include ticket stubs from one of your child's performances as one idea. Browse craft stores for stickers, paper accents and ribbons that align with the ballerina theme. Scatter them around the shadowbox to add depth to the finished product. If you have a large shadowbox, you might also include one of your child's ballet dresses or tutus.
  5. 5
Glue or pin your accent pieces to the shadowbox.
  6. 6
    Close the shadowbox.
  7. 7
Hammer a nail into your wall and hang your shadowbox in the location you've chosen in your home. Use a level to make sure it's hanging straight. If you don't want to hang it up, you might set it on a bookshelf or on your living room mantle.
  8. 8
Use a pushpin to hang your child's first pair of ballet shoes on the wall in her bedroom or next to a framed photograph of her performing ballet.
  9. 9
Hang the ballet slippers from your child's bedpost, which is particularly attractive if she has a pink or dance-themed bedroom. You might also try tying them from a doorknob. If your child's ballet shoes don't have ribbons attached, hand-stitch a coordinating ribbon onto the inside of each shoe so you can hang them.
  10. 10
Arrange the ballet slippers next to a glass vase with dried roses. Perhaps you might even use the dried roses your daughter received at one of her ballet recitals. Because ballet slippers are delicate and elegant, they pair nicely with the look of a dried flower bouquet.

  • Let your daughter help you choose items to put in your shadowbox. Since the box is all about her dancing accomplishments, it might be even more sentimental if she takes part in helping you create it.Check craft and hobby stores for shadowboxes that come in a variety of sizes and colors.
