How to Decorate a Child's Birthday Cake with an Edible Photograph
Edit Article

Add a special touch to your little one's birthday cake with an edible photograph.

Planning your little one’s birthday party is no easy task. You have to pick a theme, find invitations and decorations, and plan games. Then, there’s the cake. It has to be perfect -- even though little munchkins will soon devour it. One option for the cake is to use an edible photograph. Whether it’s a photograph of your little one, her favorite character or sports team, decorating the cake with one is easier than you think.

  1. 1
Pick the image you want to use for your edible photograph. You might choose an image that fits the theme of the birthday, a sports team or an actual picture of your child.
  2. 2
Choose a service to print your image. Many online bakeries offer edible photographs, but you can also check with your local baker. Another option is to buy a special printer, frosting sheets and edible ink and print your own from home.
  3. 3
Store your edible photograph according to the directions once you receive the sheet. Most are stored at room temperature in their sealed bag, but some require refrigeration.
  4. 4
Prepare and frost the cake. Keep the frosting smooth and flat to ensure the frosting sheet goes on evenly. Buttercream, fondant or store-bought frosting work best with edible photographs. Whipped cream or other non-dairy frostings may cause the photograph ink to bleed or fade.
  5. 5
Wash and dry your hands before handling the image.
  6. 6
Remove the image from the bag when you are ready to use it. If necessary, cut the image to fit the cake as soon as you remove it.
  7. 7
Spray or brush a thin layer of water on the frosting if it’s formed a crust. If your frosting is still moist, do not add any water. If you add too much, it will cause the ink to bleed.
  8. 8
Roll the frosting sheet, photograph side up, on the edge of the counter or a table to release the photograph from the backing. If the photograph sheet resists separation, put it in the freezer for a few minutes and then try again.
  9. 9
Hold the ends of the sheet and set the middle down where you want it on the cake. Slowly set the edges down.
  10. 10
Pat out any bubbles in the image, but don’t rub the image.
  11. 11
Finish decorating your masterpiece and prepare for the rest of the birthday party. Keep in mind, if the decorated cake is stored for a while, the colors on the edible photograph will fade.
