The Creative Zen portable music player was released in 2002, and was an early competitor to the Apple iPod. Several different varieties of Zen music players have since been introduced and consumers can choose from multiple storage capacities. Like the competing iPod, the Creative Zen allows users to create custom playlists using computer software. Selected files can be transferred to the player using a USB transfer cable, which is typically included.Windows Media Player.

    Plug the transfer cable into the Creative Zen. Connect the cable to a free USB port on the computer. Launch the Windows Media Player software on the computer.

    Click the "File" menu and choose "Open." Choose the music files to include on the playlist. Hold down the "Ctrl" key to select multiple songs. Click "Open" when ready.

    Wait for the selected songs to begin playing in Windows Media Player. Right-click on the list of songs on the right side of the screen. Choose "Add to Playlist." Click "Additional Playlist" when prompted.

    Click the Sync tab. Select the new playlist on the left side of the screen, and drag it to the Sync List area, located on the bottom right.

    Plug the Creative Zen into the computer using the USB cable. Launch the Creative Media Source program on the computer.

    Verify that the Media Source program is in the "Organizer" view. If it is in the "Player" view, click the arrow at the bottom left corner to switch views.

    Select the "Playlist" menu. Click "New Playlist." Enter a name for the playlist and press "OK."

    Double-click on the "PC Music Library" option, which is located under the "Sources" window. Select the tracks for the playlist. Hold the "Ctrl" button to select multiple songs.

    Right-click on the selected tracks and choose "Add to Playlist." Choose the newly created playlist name.

    Make sure that all of the desired tracks are selected. Click "View" and enable the "Show Right Panel" option, if it is not already turned on.

    Select the Creative Zen music player in the right panel. Double-click on "Playlists" in the "PC Music Library" section. Choose the playlist you wish to synchronize and press the "Transfer" button.
