Your new iPod won't be much fun to use until you've loaded it up with your favorite music. But to get to that stage, there are a few steps you'll need to take. The very first step is to install iTunes on your computer and load your music library into iTunes, because you'll need iTunes to copy music to your iPod. Meanwhile, plug in your iPod to charge it. It needs to charge for at least 30 minutes before it's ready to use.Set Up iTunes.

    Connect your iPod to an Apple iPod Power Adapter to charge it. Complete the remaining steps in this section, but don't proceed to Section 2 until your iPod has charged for at least 30 minutes.

    Download iTunes (link in Resources). Double-click the file after it downloads to run the installation program.

    Select "Next" at the opening screen, adjust the options to add a shortcut to your desktop and to use iTunes as your default player, select your language, choose a destination folder and then choose "Install." Click "Yes" each time the User Account Control prompt appears on your screen. Click "Finish" to exit the installation program and launch iTunes.

    Read the iTunes Software License Agreement and select "Agree" to proceed. Select "Agree" if you consent to sharing details about your music library with Apple so you can view artist images, album covers and related data. Select "No Thanks" if you don't want that information downloaded to your library.

    Choose "Go to the iTunes Store" if you want to purchase music to add to your library, or select "Scan for Media" to create your iTunes library by scanning your computer for songs and adding them to your library.

    Review the list of albums that iTunes added to your library and make adjustments as necessary. Change the library view by clicking "Songs," "Artists" or "Genres" from the menu at the top of your library.Add iTunes Music to your iPod

    Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB to Dock Connector cable. Select your iPod in the Devices list at the left of your iTunes window. Select "Music" in your iTunes browser window if it's not already selected.

    Choose the option to sync your music library with your iPod. Select "Entire music library" if you have enough free space on your iPod to store all of your songs.

    Choose "Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres" to copy a subset of your library to your iPod. Browse the library, select the audio content you want to sync, click "Apply" and wait for iTunes to sync the audio content to your iPod.

    Click the "Eject" icon next to your iPod under Devices and disconnect your iPod from USB cable. Connect a pair of headphones to the iPod to begin using it.

    Select "Music" from the Main menu on the iPod by pressing the Center button. Browse your library by one of several categories, locate a song you want to play and press the Center button to play it.


  • If you're part of a business or educational institution that activates iPods for its users, you can turn on Activation-Only Mode and connect a device without syncing any content. Launch a command prompt, type the following (including the quotation marks) and press "Enter:"
